LIVE! From The LRC: A Web Conference Seminar

Presented by LRC researchers Jeremy Snyder, Jennifer Brons, and Dan Frering on December 6, 2017, this webinar provides guidance on reducing lighting energy use in residences. Two strategies will be discussed: using LED light sources throughout a home and using motion sensor controls in multifamily outdoor and common spaces. The results of two New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Residential Emerging Technologies and Accelerated Commercialization (ETAC) initiatives will be discussed. These include the findings from installing LED lighting at 11 residences, including new construction and retrofit projects, and LEDs with motion controls at 3 multifamily buildings across New York State. The projects were conducted by the Lighting Research Center and Taitem Engineering of Ithaca, NY. Topics will include energy savings, payback periods, occupant acceptance, installer experience, tips for installers, and further resources.

About the Presenters
Jeremy Snyder, MS —At Rensselaer's Lighting Research Center, Jeremy Snyder leads projects related to energy efficiency. He directs the Lighting Energy Alliance, which conducts research and outreach on behalf of member utilities and efficiency agencies. He also leads the National Lighting Information Program, which has been called "The Consumer Reports for lighting products." Some of Snyder's recent projects include the Lighting Patterns for Homes website, a demonstration of LED lighting in residences across New York State, an evaluation of wireless lighting controls, a study on using behavioral techniques to increasing occupants' use of light switches, development of a desktop lighting controller, and investigating energy savings from luminaire integrated controls. Snyder is also an award-winning video producer and has extensive experience with technical communication using interactive multimedia. Snyder was trained as a mechanical engineer and has previous experience in fuel cells, solar power, wind power, and hydrogen energy.
Jennifer Brons, MS, LC, Educator IALD —Jennifer Brons is a research scientist and adjunct professor of architecture at the LRC. She earned her bachelor's degree in architecture from U.C. Berkeley (cum laude) and her M.S. in Lighting from Rensselaer. Since 1997, her work at LRC has focused on lighting design applications and human factor studies for new lighting technologies. She heads the "DELTA" Program, a series of lighting case studies that are available to the public online. Brons coordinates the light pollution program entitled "Outdoor Site Lighting Performance" on behalf of lighting companies in North America and Europe. She teaches lighting design and develops educational material about how to use lighting more effectively, most recently including the LRC website: Lighting Patterns for Homes.
Daniel Frering, LC —Dan Frering is the director of educational programs and grants development at the LRC, where he directs the outreach and graduate education programs. His current research includes lighting in multifamily residential buildings, occupancy-controlled outdoor lighting, and energy efficient lighting systems. Frering is also currently developing educational programs on roadway lighting and commercial lighting retrofit and redesign. Frering is a council member of the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP).
