Bjarke Ingels, founding partner of BIG Bjarke Ingels Group, will present “Social Infrastructure” on April 25, 12:15-1:45 p.m. as a LIGHTFAIR Institute® Keynote Luncheon Speaker in Room 20 BCD. This Monday Keynote Luncheon is sponsored by EATON – Booth 2916. This lecture will explore how the built infrastructure of the past can be reborn as social and cultural shapers of life and how one can proactively think of the city as a platform to use these utilities to enrich the city and become a proactive part of the public realm.
Ingels started BIG Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Through a series of award-winning design projects and buildings, Ingels has developed a reputation for designing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. Alongside his architectural practice, Ingels taught at Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and has spoken in venues such as TED, WIRED, AMCHAM, 10 Downing Street and the World Economic Forum.
Legends of Lighting Impact Speaker: James Carpenter will speak on “The Substance of Light in the Public Realm” on April 27 from 12:15-1 p.m. in The HUB Lounge, located in the Sails Pavilion, Upper Level. Award-winning Carpenter, of James Carpenter Design Associates Inc., has worked at the intersection of architecture, fine art and engineering for nearly 50 years, advancing a distinctive vision based on the use of natural light as the foundational element of the built environment.
Originally studying architecture before concentrating on the fine arts, Carpenter founded the cross-disciplinary design firm James Carpenter Design Associates in 1979 to support the application of these aesthetic principles to large-scale architectural projects. Carpenter’s work is driven by a deep awareness of materiality and craft as a means of enhancing the individual human experience within the built environment.
