WAC Lighting And Team Phoenix to Run The 2013 ING New York City Marathon
July 28, 2013
WAC Lighting’s Director of Business Development Robert Bazan is joining Team Phoenix to run the 2013 ING New York City Marathon to benefit The New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC). WAC Lighting is a proud sponsor of the NYAWC.
For the fourth year in a row, The New York Asian Women's Center (NYAWC) is recruiting 16 dedicated runners from across the world to Take on the Challenge of a Lifetime, to run 26.2-plus miles and raise funds for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Team Phoenix consists of athletes, whether seasoned or novices, who are committed to running the ING Marathon, while raising much needed funds for NYAWC. Runners who commit to raising funds for NYAWC are guaranteed entry into the 2013 ING NYC Full Marathon. In addition, Team Phoenix will provide fundraising and training support to help runners reach their goals.
NYAWC helps women and their children recover from domestic violence and human trafficking. As the largest pan-Asian agency in the nation serving domestic violence and human trafficking survivors, the agency provides comprehensive support services in over 12 languages. Ultimately, NYAWC shelters women from harm, teaches practical skills and gives back their self-respect and hope for the future.
NYAWC is the only organization that received a grant from NYC Mayor’s Office to serve human trafficking survivors. Its services are tailored for Asian women's cultural, social, economic, and legal circumstances. Because it can be difficult to identify survivors, they train healthcare providers and other agencies to recognize signs of abuse and assist survivors. Adolescents affected by abuse often act out or become reclusive. NYAWC provides digital art therapy and mentoring to help them express themselves constructively, open up and plan their bright future.
For each woman or family staying in the emergency residences, New York State pays only 75 percent of the cost and the NYAWC needs donations to cover the remaining portion. $50 can support a woman’s transportation costs for 10 visits with her counselor, lawyer, and social worker, and for job interviews and trainings. $100 can pay for one week of counseling, case management services, and vocational assistance for a woman in the non-residential and continuing care program. $250 can pay for two weeks of services. $500 can cover an average family’s costs beyond what the State pays for in a five (5)-day stay in the emergency residences.

Support of this worthy cause is helping NYAWC’s efforts to raise more than $1 million per mile for ING New York City Marathon charities.
